Which Type of Roof is Right for Your Home?

Which Type of Roof is Right for Your Home? When it comes to roofing options for your home there is no shortage of choices. It is important that you do your research to ensure that the roofing material you choose, whether for a new home or a re-roof, fits your style and your budget. Conventionally speaking, there are three main types of roofing, with sub-categories within each. Let's take a look at the benefits of these three main types of residential roofing.

Shingle Roofing

Shingle roofing is perhaps the most popular style of roofing in the United States. It is the most affordable roofing option and is lightweight, meaning it won't require any additional work to install. This type of roofing comes in many different materials, including wood, composite and asphalt shingles. Depending on the brand and type you choose you can expect asphalt roofing to last anywhere from 15 to 30 years with little maintenance required.

Tile Roofing

Tile roofing is available in a variety of styles as well. The most popular include clay tile roofing and slate tile roofing. Tile roofing is often considered to be one of the most beautiful forms of roofing, and rightfully so. However, it can be labor intensive to install and the materials are a bit more spendy than shingles. Most tile roofing will last upwards of 50 years or more though, so you generally don't have to worry about conducting re-roofing within a lifetime.

Metal Roofing

Metal roofing is the most durable type of roofing, and also one of the most expensive. With so many unique looks and colors to choose from, there is absolutely a style of metal roofing for your home. You'll almost certainly never have to replace or repair metal roofing, as it is is fire-resistant, insect proof, and they can put up with extremely high winds. Metal roofing may require additional support to install on a home though, due to its higher weight than other types of roofing.
